Climate Group Attacks Data Centre Construction Site with Acid Balloons

On the night of July 15–16, 2026, Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists targeted a Microsoft data center construction site in Amsterdam's Westport industrial area. Operatives threw balloons filled with a corrosive chemical mixture onto open concrete foundations, marking a shift from civil disobedience to direct physical sabotage against AI infrastructure.
According to Extinction Rebellion and the Tech Workers Coalition, activists used a chemical cocktail designed to degrade concrete and steel: acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, sodium chloride (salt), and acrylic paint.
XR stated that acetic acid dissolves calcium compounds in concrete, lowering its pH. Hydrogen peroxide accelerates internal steel rebar rusting once the alkaline layer is compromised, while salt acts as a corrosion catalyst. Operatives executed the action overnight when the site was empty, wearing respirators and mixing chemicals on-site to avoid accidental exposure.
The facility is being built near Sloterdijk Station by developer Pure DC to be leased by Microsoft. Pure DC confirmed that balloons containing suspected corrosive substances were thrown onto the property.
Pure DC condemned the sabotage as "irresponsible and dangerous," noting that corrosive substances posed severe burn risks to workers and first responders. Initial assessments revealed no structural damage and no operational delay to the timeline. However, the developer confirmed it would pursue legal prosecution for criminal damage. The Amsterdam police have opened an investigation.
The attack underscores growing resistance against the expansion of digital infrastructure across Europe, driven by a complex mix of local grievances, geopolitical tensions, and broader debates over resource allocation.
Grid Strain vs. Global Proportionality: Activists point out that a single Microsoft campus in Middenmeer accounts for over 1% of total electricity use in the Netherlands, raising concerns over regional grid bottlenecks and water cooling during droughts. However, energy analysts and International Energy Agency (IEA) data place global data center emissions at roughly 0.5% of global CO₂, a fraction of the footprint generated by aviation, road transport, or industrial manufacturing. Furthermore, industry proponents note that hyperscale campuses are significantly more energy-efficient than legacy on-premise servers, often reducing net enterprise power consumption through advanced cooling and massive renewable energy investments.
The Value of AI Compute: Tech worker collectives and activist groups argue that diverting utilities toward generative AI coincides with industry layoffs and delivers questionable societal benefit compared to its resource demands. Conversely, industry advocates view hyperscale AI infrastructure as a critical engine for broader economic productivity, scientific research, and data consolidation, arguing that its relatively low global environmental footprint is justified by its wide-ranging utility.
Regulatory Evasion: Beyond abstract environmental debates, localized opposition is heavily fueled by concrete regulatory disputes. In Amsterdam, activists and municipal critics allege the developer split the Westport campus into three separate smaller structures to exploit zoning loopholes, effectively circumventing a municipal ban on new hyperscale data centers.
Geopolitical Entanglements: The friction is further intensified by defense and intelligence ties. Reports revealing that Microsoft Azure servers in Middenmeer stored massive volumes of surveillance data for Israeli military intelligence transformed the facilities into targets for anti-war and human rights campaigns, providing a direct political catalyst that elevated standard environmental protests into targeted physical sabotage.
