Custom Mario Kart Wiiki Shuts Down After Admin Receives Heavy Backlash Over AI Rules

The Custom Mario Kart Wiiki, a foundational 15-year-old modding resource, has announced its permanent closure. Shutting down wiki.tockdom.com follows a severe clash between the userbase and administration over the regulation of generative artificial intelligence. The site will transition into a read-only state on June 30, 2026.
The conflict escalated in early May 2026 when the wiki administration, led by administrator Tock, implemented a lenient AI policy. Instead of an outright ban, the rule merely "strongly encouraged" users to disclose AI usage. This sparked immediate outrage from an anti-AI faction in the community, spearheaded by a user named Koura, who demanded that AI-generated content be strictly banned to protect traditional creators.
Tock defended this, arguing that policing casual AI use was impossible and hypocritical given the community's reliance on major tech platforms. He provided demonstrations proving AI could already generate functional game files. Other developers warned that strict bans would hinder progress and incite toxic witch-hunts.
However, the anti-AI faction remained firm, viewing the technology as inherently exploitative.
The situation deteriorated rapidly during a Discord debate. After facing sustained pressure, Tock abruptly banned Koura from the server, drawing severe criticism from other members. Faced with mounting backlash and citing extreme administrative fatigue from years of cyclical conflicts, Tock unilaterally announced the complete shutdown of the wiki project within an hour of the ban.
To prevent a total loss of data, the administration will release the szslibrary source code and an anonymized database backup. However, the primary repository for Mario Kart modding has been dismantled, leaving the community to rebuild.
